A friend's mauser

It is an early K (short) Mauser, Oberndorf commercial action. If 5679 is the original Mauser serial number, it dates the action to 1902-3. This is too early for a Mauser original barrel in .250-3000. Mauser started offering these K actions in .250-3000 immediately after the cartridge was designed by Charles Newton for Savage in 1914. Before, these short actions came chambered for the 8x51K and 6.5x54 K Mauser numbers only. So I guess the action was rebarreled post-WW1 or even after "liberation" in 1945. The checkered bolt handle and the stippling on the receiver ring are unusual for a factory action, so it may have been done when the action was rebarreled. Are there any markings on or under the barrel?

Axel E, thanks. Your additional info helps.
When he purchased it from the gunshop it had a Winchester barrel turned down and threaded to fit the Kurz receiver. I was shipped to David Christman(ACGG) for a new barrel in 250-3000 and a very nice walnut stock.
My buddy was just looking for a Mauser with double set triggers and this one appeared for $400. He had never heard of a Kurz and didn't know what he was buying.Last edited by papaw; 09-23-2013, 04:09 PM.
