  • Late Flintlock era German lock question

    Hi guys.

In my research for an upcoming Jaeger rifle project I have seen pictures of late flintlock era (2nd quarter of 19th Century) Jaeger rifles with what appear to be English locks on them, very very similar to the locks made and exported by Manton. Does anyone know whether the German gunmakers during this period were importing English locks or if there were German lock makers copying the English designs?

Trying to determine the possible period correctness of a particular lock.

    Thanks
    Shane

I will defer to Raimey and others for details but base on a previous post I made about my period German percussion sxs, Raimey stated that there was in fact trade and private labeling between England and Germany for arms. My sxs has lots of English traits found on their sxs arms.

      Rick,
International trade included also Belgium. Several of our members seem to have particular interest in the older guns, maybe Jon,Dick, or Axel will weigh in. In the meantime, it would be helpful if you posted clear photos of the gun, including both sides of the lock.Locks were often marked on the backside, by the actual maker. These marks are often hard to see in a photo, if a close inspection shows a mark covered by a spring/tumbler,etc., you should describe it. With this, maybe someone can help you.
