  • Mauser 98K Sportster by K. Jagger

    Hey all,
Here is another rifle I am trying to ID. It looks to me to be a Mauser 98K action that has been sportsterized by Kurt Jagger. Whats everyone think? Mauser or something else? Main thing I am after here is a date of either when the original rifle was made or when it was sportsterized.

Could the 1252 stamp be the date?

And why the two different city's? Mainz and Wiesbaden?

What do the rest of the stamps signify, the eagle over an "N", what looks like water or a wave or fire, and the letters "WRG"???

    Thanks Gene

    Gene,
your rifle was likely made from a WW2 Mauser Action, but unless there is some identifying mark on the reciever, I can't say whether it is Mauser or something else. It is chambered in 30-06, which was very popular with GIs at the time.Later, when other ammunition became more avaliable, other calibers also became popular. It carries post war proofs, from the Ulm proof house. While it likely was proofed there, proof houses often had satellite operations which also used the main proofhouse's mark. The number 1252 could be the date(Dec 1952), and I would say it is, unless it is also on the reciever. I noted the number 07780 in the barrel channel, this could also be the serial number, is it found on the reciever? BTW Dec 1952 would be a fairly early date for Bundesrepublik Adler(Eagle) proofs.I noted the rifle carries a Nickle(Marburg) scope in Jaeger side mounts. I'm not sure why both Mainz and Wiesbaden are shown on the rifle. I believe he operated in Mainz, maybe he moved to Wiesbaden or maybe he had a second operation there. Both places had concentrations of US troops, and large ROD and GUN CLUBS. The Eagle (Bundes Adler) is the nitro proof. The mark you thought looked like "water, wave, or fire" is actually one side of Red Deer antler, which is the ID mark for the Ulm proofhouse. The WRG could be the mark of someone that did part of the work for Kurt Jaeger, I don't know. I hope this helps.
    Mike
