The only photo of August Coenders I know shows him with the ribbon bar of the war merit cross, a decoration given to civilians for contributions to the war effort, but no Nazi party membership badge. So he was probably not a party member. But as Russian propaganda denounces everyone who does not support the politics of a Russian ruler, may it be Ivan Grozni, Stalin or Putin, as a “Nazi”, you may call him such. I could not care less.
Thanks Igor - I don't think such a discussion is necessary given the fascinating technical history of Koenders or Coenders - that's more than enough to marvel at.
And as always- an outstanding article with many interesting points for me!
Were Vollmer, Stange, Schmeisser and Coenders Nazis? Were Degtyaryov, Tokarev, Shpagin and Kalashnikov communists? I don’t care, as I rate them as gifted inventors and designers. Under both regimes at their time it was detrimental to your career and hazardous to your health not to join the party if invited to do so. In the article you mention Coenders’ most important invention only in passing. While employed by Roechling during WW2, he developed the “Roechling projectile” for enhanced velocity retention, range and penetration. These arrow-like, finned, elongated subcaliber projectiles were saboted. During WW2 they were not only intended for the V3 multi-chambered guns, but used in conventional long – range artillery too. Today such projectiles are worldwide state of the art for tank guns, both Nato and Russian ones.
