  • Should I be hearing "Danger Wil(helm) Robinson" regarding this? (

The title refers to a Lost in Space TV show from the 1960's here in the USA.

I havebeen looking at a double rifle listing: Miller & Val Greiss Munchen chambered for 405 Winchester for sale, and have been emailing back and forth with the seller.
It turns out that the original chambering was for 10.5x47R as determined by a gunsmith's chamber cast, and subsequently rechambered by said gunsmith to 405 WCF.
The seller then tells me that he has fired 6 rounds of 405 Winchester factory rounds, 3 from each barrel and is selling the rifle because the recoil is too much for him!
I warned him to think carefully about doing that again as the 405 Win factory loads (no longer available) generate approximately 42,000 PSI, where the black powder 10.5x47R likely was probably in the 13,000-15000 PSI ballpark. The seller maintains that there has been no damage to the rifle and that lockup remains tight.
I would have no problem loading 405 Win brass to the levels of the 40-82 Winchester blackpowder cartridge which would likely approach the levels of the 10.5x47R. There does not appear to be any data at allfor the 10.5x47R, so it is all guesswork.
The photo of the barrel makings sent by the seller is not very good, I think I can see an eagle, a Crown over W, and a Crown over G or B or E. I do not see a Crown over U .
I am considering making an offer on this double rifle. I know that I can load and shoot it safely. I would be very concerned for anyone who bought it thinking they could shoot 405 Win standard factory or hand loads in it! DSCF5495.jpg DSCF5496.jpg

Run. I saw that rifle, I think. The rifle isn't even Nitro proofed. The seller is off his beam. You might shoot it safely but will you ever get it regulated?

I wrote an article on the 10.5 X 47R. It's a capable little cartridge but all I loaded it with was BP because my combination gun isn't Nitro proofed.

That's my opinion and worth what you paid for it.

The 10.5x47R(I believe, w/o checking a chamber cast) is based on the "Mauser Base Case" shortened to about 47mm. This case has a head diameter of about, .515-.516", whereas the head diameter of the 405 Win. is about 458-.460". This seems like too much of a mismatch to consider rechambering a 10.5x47R to 405 Win., plus the difference between the MB rim and Winchester rim. If the rifle was originally chambered for a different cartridge, that cartridge's dimensions should be evaluated vs. 405 Win.

That's right, Mike. I never even thought of that.

Yeah, it looks like it has become a whole bunch or trouble when the seller had it rechambered. There is a lot that can be done with an original chambering, whatever it might be or have been, but all bets are off now. Without having the gun in hand it would be difficult to determine what that actual damage may be. The "gunsmith" had performed the chamber cast then rechambered it to 405Win and who knows where that is now. Collectible value has certainly been ruined. The seller seems to not understand what he may have done. The rifle is in California, I am in Connecticut, so an in hand evaluation would be impossible. I think I will run away from this now.
