I found this treasure in a rural gunshop in Northern Wisconsin. Caliber is 30-06 with a 20” barrel. It has a Lyman front sight, and the action is tapped for a receiver sight, so it probably left the Jaeger shop with one. It now wears a Leupold scope with steel Leupold mount and rings. It is built on a Mauser action of some type, but I have been unable to identify the maker. There are no markings at all on the receiver. The bolt release is a simple lever that is pushed down. The safety is a two position slide on the right rear of the receiver. I know that Paul Jaeger used FN actions. Is this one of them? The full Mannlicher style stock has a nice cheekpiece with a shadowline. The checkering on the pistol grip and fore end is 24 LPI. The sling swivels are 3/4” and the front one is a barrel band that fits through the stock. I think the Pachmayr recoil pad is original, because when I removed it to check for a stockmaker’s initials (there were none) I could see some runs of stain and oil on the unfinished end, so it had not been shortened. The serial number is 8955. Does anyone have any idea of exactly when this rifle was built? It definitely shoots well. My first 3 shot group at 100 yards with factory ammo was about 7/8”!!!!!! I think the drilling will stay in the rack this November and the Jaeger will go into the woods with me after whitetails!
