Bid on a Haenel 9x57 online today. I went to $875, but didn’t feel I could go more without inspecting the rifle. I hope the buyer was lucky and got a nice rifle.

I have one rifle in 9x57R. It is a Kerston action cape gun SxS with claw mounts. Beautiful gun that had been refinished at some point in its life with new case hardening, blued barrels and wood refreshed. Unfortunately they did not stain the wood so it is a light Carmel color instead of the normal dark reddish brown. It has to be my favorite hunting gun I have used. I took it to Africa back in 2017 as having gone before I knew there are lots of small game and fowl to hunt while on a plains game hunt. So I included a couple boxes of #6 shot 16 gauge shells. I hand loaded the rifle cartridges with 35 caliber Swift 225 grain AFrame bullets at 2400 fps. I mounted a Japanese made 30mm 1 x 7 scope and sighted it for out to 300 yards making notes to 100, 200,250 and 300 yard impacts. The rifle performed flawless on several animals from small reedbuck to 400+ pound waterbuck and Gemsbuck out to 240 yards. I also hunted quail and rabbit leaving the scope on the gun and power on 1. It was so easy to swing on the birds and rabbits with the huge field of view of the scope and using the cross hairs . I don’t know if I will ever get to go on another hunting trip like that but I definitely would take it again. The 9x57 is a powerful round with the proper bullet for most herbivores on the planet and bears as well. If I were to have a gun made it would be this one.
Farmers in Africa usually couldn't afford a "high class" large caliber rifle but could afford a common Mauser. Many chose a 9x57 as their one rifle (often re-bored 8x57 war surplus) and by most accounts they served quite well in this roll. This was one cartridge that was loaded with equal ballistics in the rimless and rimmed version.

I have been burned a few times with online auction guns, if I am going to spend over $1000, I want to inspect the firearm. I would like a 9 or 9.3 in a set trigger bolt gun. Perhaps there will be an auction in easy driving distance some time.

Mike I can highly recommend either 9x57 or 9x56 in either a Mauser 98 or a Mannlicher Schoenauer. Don't rule out a either 98 or BRNO or CZ 9.3x62. All are a delight to carry and pure poison on deer and wild boar.
