  • 7.5x55 Swiss

    Hello
I am considering bidding on a Swiss target rifle. It is chambered for 7.5x55, does anyone have experience with this cartridge, is it a suitable cartridge for cast bullets? I have considerable experience with 8.15x46, but very limited experience with other target rounds. I would be shooting 200 yards offhand. I prefer cast, but would shoot jacked if the bore slugs .308. The case seems oversized for cast loads, I have a schuetzen that has been rechambered for 303 British, it shoots very well with cast bullets useing 16 gr of IMR4227.
    Thanks Mike

    Mike,
A good friend of mine shoots a good bit of 7.5x55, but all in military rifles of different models. He shoots mostly, if not all, jacketed bullets( .308" as I recall). I believe earlier chambers had different dimensions and I suggest you make a chamber cast to determine bullet weight, seating depth, etc. Also, it may help to ask the current owner if he has any advice about loading. To your basic question, any cartridge can be loaded with cast bullets. I would guess it depends on how the rifle shoots and at what distance you intend to shoot. As I said, my friend shoots jacketed bullets, but what I didn't say is we have targets out to 500 yds.

thanks for the reply. This rifle is on Gun Broker offered by an importer. I am a sucker for rifles with lots of bells and whistles to play with and this 1930s Hammerli Martini full target rifle certainly has those. I am also cheap, so I like cast bullets.

Mike, You are welcome. I get a lot of personal satisfaction from shooting cast bullets, it's more than just the savings. Let us see photos when the rifle comes in.

Had to pay more than I wanted, didn't know sales tax was collected. It is Swiss not German, but the main language of the Swiss is German and they are not far apart. If any one wants to see photos posted, let me know. The photos are from the seller's listing, I won't have the rifle for at least 2 weeks. I will round up dies in the mean time and hopefully brass.

Nice Rifle Mike (I saw it on gunBroker). Let us know how it performs once you get to shoot it.
Side note: I wonder how often people from this forum bid against each other on auctions :-)

With over 2 days left on the auction, it became obvious, with 24 bidders, if I wanted it, I would have to do the “Buy it now”. The rifle weighs 9.2kg so shipping will be expensive, I’m still waiting for the seller to send the amount due.

                    Mike,
I found out from my own experiences; "When you snooze, you lose".
                    Better luck next time.
