I'm new to drillings although a shooter and collector for more than 60 years. I recently bought a J.P. Sauer & Sohn drilling made circa 1893-1895 fulfilling a wish since boyhood. It's in excellent condition and completely functional. The chambering is 12x12/.38-55. Once the rifle barrel is selected is there a way to safely de-cock it without firing it? For example, if the rifle barrel is selected but I want to use the shotgun barrels can I de-cock the rifle barrel without opening the action? Thanks any advice on using the drilling safely.

Karl,
Is it a hammer gun or hammerless? If it is a hammer gun where the right hand hammer fires both the rifle and shotgun barrels, all you have to do is move the selector to "shot". If it is hammerless, or a hammer gun with an internal hammer for the rifle barrel, I don't think there is a way, without opening the action. In this case, you have to open it, hold the trigger back( with selector on rifle) and close the gun( safer if you withdraw the cartridge), then move the selector to "shot". ( there is a recent thread, here, on de-activating the set trigger)
