Here may be some confusion again. In the 1936/37 Jahrbuch under Jagdgau Kurhessen, Gaujagdrat, for Jagdhundewesen is listed: Kaufmann H. Koelsch, Kassel – Wilhelmshöhe. Here "Kaufmann" is not a name, but the profession of Mr. Koelsch. German "Kaufmann" is English "businessman, merchand, grocer". Revierförster (profession) F.Kaufmann (here a name) is listed as Kreisjägermeister Melsungen only.

        Axel,
How would "Salesman" fit for "Kaufmann"?I haven't been participating in this thread(due to lack of knowledge), but have been watching from the side, with interest. It seem to me that everyone is well meaning and the errors/misunderstanding come mainly from strained translations. Once again, this points out the problems of trying to translate "terms of art" to normal English, or even German.

As far as I understand , a "salesman" would be a "Verkäufer" in German, a man who sells goods to customers, but not at his own calculations and risk, in the name of his boss instead. A "Kaufmann" is someone who makes the decisions what, where and when he buys in goods and how, where and when he sells them. A "Kaufmann" may be a small grocer who also stands in his shop as his own salesman. On the other hand, a man who sits in his office with many emploiees, buys raw coffee now from Brazil or cattle the other day from Argentinia by the shipload and resells it by the ton to processing companies, is a "Kaufmann" too. A Kaufmann may even run a manufacturing Company. Many of the owners of German gunmaking companies were not gunsmithes, but "Kaufleute" (plural of "Kaufmann") I suspect Koelsch was more of the latter kind Kaufmann.
