  • Which barrel for the .22 WMR insert

    Hi
I am installing a .22 WMR insert on a drilling and was wondering which barrel is more traditional. Normally I install the insert into the left barrel but noticed a 1960's Sauer drilling that an insert had been fitted into the right barrel.

    thanks

Here in Germany insert barrels are usually installed in the right barrel of a drilling as this allows for using the single-set feature of the front trigger for the insert too.

      Doug,
Of course,Axel is correct, but in addition; if you intend to install one in the left barrel, you need one made for the left barrel. Due to the configuration,if you install a right barrel EL in the left barrel, you may run out of adjustment before you get it sighted in. If your drilling doesn't have a scope, you will need a device to hold the rear sight up(viseresperre?), if it is the automatic type.

I stand corrected. I just looked at the drillings with the insert and some are they are all installed on the right barrel and some are the right...... Sorry for the confusion.
One of the inserts I ust acquired is marked left and 2 were marked right.

          Doug,
I guess you have a choice then. BTW, I believe you can use the one marked "left" in the left barrel of a BF or the over barrel of a BBF, also.

I am going to put one of the Right barrel inserts in a 60's Sauer 16x16/6.5x57R, the other Right barrel insert into a 30's Griefelt 16x16/8x57IRS http://www.germanguns.com/upload/sho...lling-Addition and the left barrel insert in a 40's Meffert 16x16/8x57IR.

              Insert Barrel?

I am also interested in adding a .22 mag insert barrel to my Krieghoff 16X16X8X57JR.
Are the full length insert barrels more accurate? Approx. cost to have this done in the US?
              Thanks!

                Jim,
The accuracy depends on the individual barrel, rather than the length, but I would opine that the new generation of ELs that adjust at the muzzle would have a better chance, since they should be stiffer. If you are thinking of one of those, you wouldn't be limited to 22 mag. You could have 22 Hornet, or 5.6x50R, or even 8x57IR to make it a double rifle drilling. Where do you plan to buy the EL? The source would drive the price.
