  • German Nitro Proofed Shotgun Service Pressures?

    Hi!
Any information concerning the proof and service pressures for nitro proofed German shotguns (1908-1930's) with 2.5 " or 2.75" inch chambers in 16 b?
I have a 10 b SXS Linder Daly made around 1908 with 2 & 7/8" and several 1930's 16 bore shotguns with 2.5" chambers (Sauer and Merkels). All have steel barrels.
    Thanks for any information.
    Jim

    Jim,
While I don't have the max pressure " in front of me", I understand 2 1/2" and 2 3/4" chambered guns were proofed the same. In more modern times than your query( 1989 table, measured in LUP), the max pressure for 16ga ammo was 680 bar. BTY, 10, 12, and 14 ga were all the same at 650 bar. I think, but may be wrong, that the max pressure for ammo during the 1908- 1930s time period was the same. Axel will know.

      Thanks Mike,
I cannot locate any information about German service pressures pre World War 2.
There is easy access to British service pressures, etc.
Hopefully, someone can update the available information about German service pressures1900-1945.
      Thanks!
      Jim

The latest CIP info I have for 2-1/2 & 2-3/4 inch shotgun shells was this: PT or average working pressure maximum for shells is 740 bar. The PE mean pressure or proof pressure is 930 bar. There is also a secondary requirement for velocity not to exceed 425 M/S in 12 gauge, 390 M/S in 16 & 20 gauge. I am resonably confident these are accurate but Axel is usually the final word. Thanks, Diz

Thanks for that information, Diz. I am in the process of developing some loads for one of my 16 gauge drillings. I cannot measure the pressure only the velocity. Would you know the weight of the projectile used in the CIP test that has the velocity max of 390 M/S?
          Thanks, Peter

Peter, I believe the proof weight was 540 grains of lead shot. Thanks, Diz
