  • Vinz Urbas of Ferlach?

Does anybody have any information on this gunmaker, Vinzenz Urbas, of Ferlach, Austria? I have two examples of his rifles, both 7X64 caliber 98 Mausers. One holds the distinction of being the firearm that I've owned longer than any other and I've owned many since age 14.
The first was bought by my father as a gift on the occasion of my high school graduation in 1967. It was likely a WWII GI bring-back. I was told you could fire .280 Remington ammo in it. I did on occasion as it was not until much later that I could get my hands on real 7X64 ammo. It is a real tack driver. I had the bore hard chrome plated and eventually mounted an old Weaver scope on it.
Decades passed and along came the internet and gun auction sites. Here, my second V. Urbas appeared, also in 7X64. Obviously a post war example as it featured the new & improved 98 action sitting on a 1960's style stock.
These two guns are the most accurate rifles that I own. After I began shooting and reloading for both, I discovered the V.U #1 had been rechambered to .280. My resized cartridges, having been fired in gun #1, would not fit into the newer rifle, #2.
A few years ago the NRA held their convention in St. Louis. I chose to take along Urbas #1 but they told me nothing that was not stamped on the barrel. Can you help enlightening me further?

      Hello

I don't know if the following is the correct Vincenz (note the c-spelling) Urbas but it's all I've got. At least he was from Ferlach.

Vinzenz (note the z-spelling) Urbas, B?chsenmachermeister passed some time in July 1941. Below was an ad from 1897

There may very well have been more than one Vinc/zenz Urbas but I have no knowledge of any other than the above-mentioned Urbas. Different spellings of names were not uncommon over time or between generations.

I agree that images would be helpful.

Also: I believe 7x64 would be post 1917.

EDIT: a Vinzenz Urbas, Gewehrfabrikant, had two sons - Vinzenz and Ignaz, so maybe there were more than one V. Urbas peddling guns.

      Kind regards
      Peter

            Hello

Sorry, but you need to disassemble the rifles and snap images of the markings on them and post the images here.

Apparently a Vincenz Urbas establishment was active post WW2 and at least up until the 1980's. The establishment used the number 36 in front of the serial number (like this 36.xxxx). http://www.hallowellco.com/Ferlach%2...de_numbers.htm the link will explain.

What scope is on the second rifle ("the newer one")?

            Kind regards
            Peter

A Vincens Urbas, 1872 to 1941, founded the business in 1898. His son, spelled Vinzens, continued, as did his grandson Herbert, born 1942. Herbert served as curator of the Ferlach museum from 1965 to 1988. In the late 1970s he ceased gunmaking.

I take it then there were father & son Vinzenzs, the elder passing in 1941 and the son must have made the 1960s improved 98 sporter.
