  • Hammer drilling calibers?

Barrel is marked 67/49. Our web site states it is a .41 caliber. But what cartridge? Owner says it is a 11.5X65R - I never heard of this one. Also, another gun owner has a like drilling that is described as being 32-40 or similar. Sounds like a 8X58 Sauer? The world wants to know.

I don't know if these guys are correct or not so if any argument "correct-incorrect" should come up you'll have to argue with someone else but me. I'm only trying to be helpful.

      Gut-n-Tight,
The mark 67/49 does not identify the nominal cartridge, rather it only shows the bore(not groove or bullet ) diameter of the barrel; as actually measured by the proof house( in gauge measurement). This would be like trying to identify which cartridge a modern rifle uses, if the bore diameter measured .300". Would it be 30-30, 30-06, 300 Win. Mag, or some other cartridge? The way to find the correct cartridge would be to measure the chamber and the most common way to measure the chamber is by making a chamber cast and measuring it ( the dimensions will not be an exact match, the chamber will always be a few thousandths larger). Are you sure the owner didn't say it is a 11.15x65R ?

The owner stated 11.5X65R but it could be a typo. I do not have it in hand.

          Gut-n-Tight,
When you do get it "in hand", you can solve the question by making, or having someone make a chamber cast, and "slug" the barrel. The case length is not indicated by this type proof mark, and older chambers often didn't clearly show where the case neck ended and the leade started; especially if it was for heeled bullets. Most 11.5 mm cartridges usually take 45 caliber bullets.
