low-recoil 9.3 x 62?

Is there such a thing as an easy-on-the-shoulder load in 9.3 x 62 mm Mauser that is adequate for large White-tail Deer at short to medium distances ? probably 100 yards maximum? The factory and custom loadings I have experienced are too much these days for my aging shoulder that once was dislocated in a home accident.

It is a 1930s-era Oberndorf Commercial Mauser with a claw-mounted telescopic sight. I still like it (or the idea of it); but has it's time for me passed?

I still shoot a 7 x 57 mm Rigby Mauser and an old, long-barreled 30.30 Winchester accurately enough, both being comparatively low-recoil. .

You can easily handload ammo to meet your requirements. If you don't handload and won't take it up, you should be able to have your custom loader come up with one. A 193 gr 9.3x72R bullet loaded to about 2,000 should be about what you are looking for.

I had been shooting 250 grain bullets at 2400 and 270 grain at 2300.

I do not re-load, but as I had stocked-up on unprimed Noma brass many years ago, I have been able to employ the services of those who do reload.

Try looking online for lead bullet loads for the 9.3 x 62. There are forums where guys are shooting lead bullets in about everything emaginable at reduced loads using everything from Unique pistol powders to trail boss black powder substitute and getting great results from 1500 FPS up to 2000 + FPS. I got a load from one for my 8x57JR stalking rifle using Unique powder shooting a 190 grain lead bullet around 1600 FPS and it is more accurate than full load jacketed bullets and half the recoil and blast. I would not hesitate using this on a whitetail. Like Mike said there are 9.3 bullets out there in 193 and 200 grain weights that should work fine in your rifle.

15 gr. of Unique, open cell foam filler with either bullet should be more than adequate and around 1600 fps. 34-36 grs. of IMR-3031 will be a little faster, around 1800 fps.

I load the Norma Vulcan 232grain bullets to 2500 and they feel about like a 30-06 with 180 grain. Those Vulcan are devastating on deer and hogs. Never had to shoot one more than once and have yet to recover a bullet.

Another option is to acquire a 9.3x57 Mauser.
