  • Krieghoff Einstecklauf - Sighting-In Process

Waidmannsheil to all -- hope you're all doing well these days.

I finally got my "Unbekannter Hersteller" (Maker Unknown) Drilling out to the range to begin the process of sighting in the Krieghoff .22 Mag barrel insert (Einstecklauf).

I spent some time before firing the first shots bore-sighting the 8mm rifle barrel onto a target at 50 yards and then adjusting the 1.5-6X Hensoldt-Wetzlar scope to be close to that. The scope isn't as easy to adjust as the Leupold scopes I'm used to, but using some info found online (either from this site or the DoubleGun site) I got it done. (That was after removing all of the old dried grease from under the top plate and ring last night, as was recommended.)

This image shows the impact of one round from the 8mm Mauser barrel at 3 o'clock using the iron sights and an informal rest (in hindsight, I should have fired at least 3 rounds); and above it, there's a tight 3-shot group from the 22 Mag using the scope -- all shot from 50 yards. I think this confirms that the Einstecklauf will be accurate enough for small game out to 50 yards or more, once I get it perfectly dialed in that is. I am very pleased that it shot this well, especially when you consider the action has to be opened up to unload/load each time which disturbs the setup on the bench.

At this point, I think I've settled on the following for a Drilling/Einstecklauf sight-in process, and I'm curious if anyone sees anything they'd change?

    * Shoot a 3-shot group with rifle sight (iron) at 50 yards with the 8mm Mauser (hope it's close to center)

    * Adjust the scope to then group with the iron sights at 50 yards, with the 8mm Mauser

    * Adjust the Einstecklauf 22 Mag to group with the 8mm Mauser group at 50 yards, when scoped

    * Then check impact of the 8mm & 22 Mag at 75 yards, and the 8mm only out to 100 and 150 yards

I'm hoping to do the above in 1 to 2 more trips to the range, now that I am comfortable removing and adjusting the Einstecklauf at the bench.

If the iron sights won't group with the scope, then maybe I'll only use the Einstecklauf when it's scoped, but we'll see how it goes.

    Thanks all.

    Old No7,
It's your gun and you will be the one hunting with it, so you can do it any way you want. If it were mine I would sight the scope in first( with the scope) to shoot about 1 1/2" high at 100( yds. or meters, which ever way the range is laid out). Then I would sight the EL to shoot about point on at 50. I sighted my 22 Mag ELs at 100 meters, but found that I never shot anything at more than 50 meters. Once this is done, you can see how the 8mm and 22Mag shoot at 50, if you want. If you insist on changing the iron sights, you will have to decide which barrel you want to sight in, I suggest you chose the 8mm and "hold off" with the 22 Mag. When game comes, more than likely the scope will be mounted. I know one shot is not enough to check anything, but the one 8mm round you fired reminded me of one of my O/U combination guns. Most of my guns stay sighted in pretty well over the years, but that one often shoots to the right after a year or two. That scope is one w/o internal windage adjustment, so adjustment results in bending the tube. I believe this makes the "hook plate" slip in the dovetail ( it may not be tight enough). I make the main adjustment by moving the "hook plate"( to move the bullet left, move the front [hook] plate right). If yours turns out the same and it causes trouble for a couple years, I suggest you "stake" the plate so it won't move any more.

I agree with what Mike said. However, as he also mentioned, it is your rifle and you should sight it in with what will work best for you under your hunting conditions.

The drilling I have my einstecklauf installed in is not equipped with a scope. With the open sights I was able to work up a centerfire rifle load that shot to POA at 50 yards then adjusted the einstecklauf to shoot to POA at 25 yards. For the conditions where I hunt the 50 yards is more than adequate for the CF cartridge and with open sights, 25 yards is about my limit for head shots on squirrels.

You've successfully come this far so I doubt you'll have any real difficulties figuring out what will work best for you.
