  • 2 piece Brass?

    Hi Folks,
Bought a drilling recently and it came with 9 boxes of factory S&B ammo in 9.3X72r.

As I usually due I pulled one down and noticed what appeared to be a "cup" in the base of the case (inside) and on the outside it almost looks like a seam all around the case. This is recent ammo as it is boxer not berdan primed and brand new factory ammo.

Is S&B making 2 piece cases for this caliber??? I had never seen this before although I am familar with the process. I always thought this was for blackpowder rounds only and not be done on smokeless.

Could they be silver soldering the two parts together to get the strength they need for the higher pressure of of smokeless powder??

    Anyone else seen this??

    Don,
I've never worked with the new S&B cases, but doubt they are two piece cases, this would just be too expensive to produce. I suspect that what you are seeing is the result of the contour of the "drawing dies/punches" used in manufacturing process. It would help if you sacrifice one of the cases, either mill/saw/file it into half. Then we could see exactly what they did. Can you post photos?

      Mike,

You are right again. Cut one open on and sure enough it is exactly as you described it. I guess it was just th way the light shone in the bottom that made it look like it was two piece and the "seam" is just the way it was drawn....

Thanks Mike, I wouldn't have thought to cut it open. Sometimes we overlook the simple things...

      Again Thanks,
      Don
