  • Dr. Walter Gerard with mount.

Just purchased a Dr. Walter Gerhard scope of unknown power, value and date of manufacture. Markings are the serial number on the turret base, 412XX, a stylized "G" and "Dr. Walter Gerard" next line "Charlottenburg." Three-bar reticule with "dot on a string".

I know he went out of business in the 1920s. It's a 20mm tube with slim ocular and objective bells and brass bezels. The mount is a clamp on a bar with three holes. It appears to be silver soldered. The leather strap and lens cups are sooo cute. Question, O Ones Of Great Knowledge: Will this scope handle the recoil of an 11.15x50R M Target on a 10-pound drilling?

If so, the drilling already has claw bases and the quick-release would have to be swapped out for rings and claws, or the scope traded for one already so-equipped. History? Advice? Fatherly counsel? Pompous condemnations? Snide comments?

Photos to come as I fight my way through the Teutonically complex uploading procedures peculiar to this forum. Jon: Please convert our fine site to a "Click and Drag" system for us geek-challenged members.

        Richard,
While old, the scope is a "known" brand. I believe it will handle the recoil of 11.15x50R, which is not very bad anyway. With nothing but a feeling to go on, I think your scope is somewhere around 4X. The mount base on the scope would normally be pretty easy to fabricate a base for, the complication comes from the need (desire) to use existing claw mount bases. The location of the bases was determined for the scope original to the drilling, and won't likely be correct for your scope. EAW (Ernst Apel, Wuerzburg) has a "system" to use existing claw mount bases with "swing mount rings". They have a website that shows this system pretty clearly. I believe your gunsmith/machinist could fairly easily fabricate a base with "rail" to fit your scope, using a similar system. This way, the location of the scope can be adjusted for correct eye relief.
