  • Drilling Stock Removal -- What about the Greener safety?

    Hello all:

My German Drilling (maker unknown), but which has features very similar to a Sauer with the side clips, rifle barrel selector, Greener cross bolt, Greener safety and cocking indicators. It may be a Blitz Drilling action, but I'm not sure. (The Greener safety on mine goes forward and back; while many Sauer safeties seem to go up and down.)

1 of the 3 cocking indicators does not work as well as the other 2, and I'd like to look inside and "see" what is going on inside the action.

I see that opposite the Greener Safety, on the right side, there appears to be a screw slot set into an escutcheon; does that part get removed to enable the safety to be disconnected and the stock to be removed?

I searched in vain on the web for Drilling Disassembly tips or a PDF file and came up empty...

Thanks in advance for any help offered.

    Old No7,
Your drilling seems to be a triggerplate or Blitz action one. To remove the Greener safety is not very complicated. There are two screws in the housing, in most of the safeties, one of the screws is a small wood screw that holds the safety to the stock. In most cases, the other screw is a machine screw that holds the assembly together. Remove the wood screw( if you remove the machine screw instead, Then, replace it and remove the other one). Then tap the other end of the safety spindle( right side) and it should come right out. If the stock has been refinished, it may help to "trace" around the wood/metal joint, at the safety, with a very thin blade or sharp scribe, to prevent splintering. If the safety moves a bit, then "hangs up", just turn the safety button or hold the triggers down. The safety should come out with tittle to no force. If you disassemble the rest of the drilling, you will encounter a rod that transfers movement from the selector to another rod( from dolls head to rearsight) that causes the sight blade to stand up. The rod in the receiver has a very specific "bend" in it, do not try to straighten it or make any "corrections" to it. When you reassemble it, just "fiddle" with it until it goes back in. You may have to rotate it a bit or "wiggle" it up or down, but don't force it or bend it to make it go. I hope I didn't confuse matters.

There is no need to remove the Greener safety in disassembling such a simple Blitzschloss = triggerplate locks drilling. First, remove the triggerguard. It is held to the stock by a a small woodscrew at the rear. The front end is screwed into the triggerplate. Remove the screws , usually two, that hold the triggerplate to the action body. One is on the rear end of the lower tang, covered by the triggerguard. The other one connects triggerplate to action body in front. Now wiggle the action body up and down until it comes out. Important: Remove the action body = receiver first. The triggerplate with the locks and triggers comes out last and goes in first. Keep the locks cocked all the time. If you want to remove the Greener safety too, follow Mike's advice.

Wunderbar! Vielen dank to both of you!

I won't get to this for a few days, but I will be sure to report back here on this, as it might help others later too.

        Edited to add:
I have started a new post to document my attempted repairs of the Cocking Indicators of the Drilling.
