  • 9.3 x 72r

Welp, I have a drilling so chambered on the way. Shotgun the typical 16 bore choked full and full on this one. It is a Carl Lewerentz and that's all I know of it so far. Now for the question. I know lots of you guys have worked with the 9.3 X 72 and it has a good reputation. So far I've been unable to find 9.3 X 72R brass, can it be made from 9.3 X 74 or is there a source I've not found? Seems I read somewhere 9.3 X 74 could be used as a parent case. If not, what would be a parent case? I'm assuming a bullet weight of around 200 grs., is 220 too heavy? The drilling is Nitro proofed I am told but I expect I'll be using black, certainly at first and until I run it through my chrono.

Any readily info available on Lewerentz? Was he a retailer or maker? Suhl, Zella-Mehlis, elsewhere? It may be here as early as late next week and I'll post pics.

I don't remember exactly who recommended to me this site or piqued my already too fervent interest in German firearms but it's getting expensive....I hope you're happy....I'm having a ball!!!!

    Sharps:
I've seen Buffalo Arms make it or have it made from 9.3X74R but I wouldn't recommend it. On some tight chamberings the base has to be really resized. Carl Lewerentz of Stargard/Starogard Poland(?) was a firearms merhant and like all other non-Suhl or non-Zella-Mehlis gunsmiths sourced Suhl & Zella-Mehlis.

    Kind Regards

      Sharps,

I bought a bunch of Norma's from Huntington a while back:

Thanks Raimey and Buschemann. After I posted that I did find the Norma's at Huntington. Looks like the only game in town but what the heck, that's good brass.

Ron Reed in Oklahoma at RAR has made up some for me for use in my older back action drillings. Also fabricated some 5.6 X 35 for my Zeigenhaun. Does a great job. sales@reedsammo.com

            Vic,
9.3x72R(.427"head dia)and 9.3x74R(.465"head dia) are drastically different cartridges; assuming you are not talking about 9.3x72R Sauer&Sohn, which is similar to 9.3x74R. 9.3x72R Norm. ammo, made by Z&B is avaliable from J&G Sales. This ammo is boxer primed and the brass is perfectly useable. In addition to Norma, as noted above, brass is avaliable from Bertram. I believe there is some brass avaliable, made from 9.3x74R; but this is a pretty complicated process, similar to making it from 30-06 and unless you have a pretty good shop and big pile of x74 brass, not the best way to go. Bullets will depend greatly on the groove diameter of your rifle. There is a three part article in WAIDMANNSHEIL, about 9.3x72R, I believe #39-41, I think they are avaliable from the "home office".

There were three generations of country gunsmithes/-dealers named Lewerenz at Pyritzerstrasse 22 in Stargard, Pomerania, since 1945 Poland, Richard, Carl and Oskar. As your Drilling was retailed by Carl it may be early, as son Oskar took over in 1910, before the Nitro proofs came into use. But Oskar may have continued to use the established company name "Carl Lewerenz". Please post photos of the prooofmaks under the rifle barrel.

                Sharps,
If you are still in a bind with ammo once you get the gun drop me a line and I am sure we can put something together to get you going as I have several hundred rounds of loaded, once fired & new brass around to feed the several 9.3x72R s that I have.

Goodness...first of all thanks for all the recent replys, information and offers. I don't remember from where I ordered that drilling but do remember it having a cracked receiver, between the locking lug mortises if I remember correctly. It went back post haste. I'm still in the market for a 9.3 X 72R but haven't found the one I want...er....can afford.

Oooops...I saw this drilling still for sale on a gun site. It didn't have a cracked frame but I believe that was the only problem it didn't have.
