MS9x56,
When I hunt with a bolt gun, I usually only load one in the chamber and one in the mag. If it's not dead at the first shot, I'm lucky to get the second chance and would never have a 3rd of 4th. Just for kicks, when you have some extra time, you might check the barrel lug and screw that fasten the forward sling loop to the Mannlicher Schoenauer. If you find any "bright spots", indicating "rubbing", you might relieve the areas, Also, you might treat the nose cap as you did for the Ruger. Don't forger the hole in the barrel lug. Good luck.

Interesting post, I have only 3 rifles with full length stocks. A Brno Mauser made in 1948, 8x57. A Mannlicher MCA, 243 Winchester that I am still working up a load for. The last is an Austrian Alex Henry chambered for 8x50r, the forend is held on by 2 wedges. I have not fired any of them enough to see if barrel heating is a problem. None are target rifles so a round or two at a fleeing white tail is about the only use.

Yes, as long as the rifle was sighted in with a cold(ambient temp.) barrel. This only requires letting the barrel cool between shots, and you should do this anyway with a combination gun so the procedure would be familiar. While I'm not saying there is anything wrong wit it, some insist on treating it like a rifle for competition and shooting 5 shot groups with low mounted scopes to maintain "cheek weld". It is important to keep the same position in competition but if you only shoot once this doesn't seem as critical. Never the less, when they experience poor groups it is easier to explain why, and suggest some " fixes" than try to change other people's habits, which under other conditions are good ( in other words, help them do what they want).

Took 3 rifles to the range today, the range is 2 hours away. It was already mid 80 by the time I fired 1st round, by noon it was high 90s. 2 rounds, lay the rifle down, 2 rounds from 2nd while first cooled and so on. Bad day all around, the Ajax scope on the Mauser sporter bit the bridge of my nose. The bore on the Mauser slugs .321, I am shooting .321 jacketed bullets and get bad copper fouling after a few rounds. I am going to try .318 and see if it continues.

Mike,
Taking more than one rifle, as you did, is the best way I know of to let the barrels cool if you can't fire a round, come back the next day to fire the second, then the third the following day. That is not too practical, unless there is a range in the back yard( that would be nice).
