I am interested in a Merkel 303 E which has a one piece forearm. Was a one piece forearm an option for 1956 guns of this model? I have never seen this on a Merkel overunder . Does this devalue this gun?

billq,
That is a good question. The reason for the three piece forearms is to have only one "iron" and latch in multi-barrel sets, in other words, to be cheaper overall. On the other hand, you can never tell what will turn a collector's "comb" red; there may be a collector, right now, arguing for a lower price because of a one piece forearm. If I collected Merkels, it wouldn't matter if the gun had only one barrel set.

Thanks Mike,
Was the one piece forearm a common feature ? I have never seen one before.
This gun has a well done stock extension and appears in excellent condition. Any idea how much a stock extension devalues a gun. I am not a collector but a shooter but the looks of a gun are important to me.

billq,
I don't know how common they are on Merkel, the only Merkel I have is a SXS. They are common on other brands, I have 4 barrels for a Heym and each barrel set has it's own forearm. I remember reading, in book of used gun values , that a separate forearm should be valued at half the value of the barrels it was made for. With regard to the extension, the amount of devaluation is very subjective and I don't know how to answer. There are people that are talented enough to make the joint virtually invisible, but this level of work is expensive.
