  • Waffen Honold Rifle--Happy Update

After giving it some thought, I decided to suck it up and spend the money to have this thing done right. If I half-assed this project it would bother me for the rest of this rifle's existence. After making a couple phone calls a gunsmith named Dennis Olson in Montana was recommended to me so I sent the rifle off to him. Here's the result:

Looks good and clean, the scope fits tightly but can still be removed, etc. Glad I finally got all this metalwork out of the way. Now I just have to fix the cracks in the stock so I can test shoot the rifle before moving on to bluing and more extensive stock work. The only thing that could throw a wrench in the plans is if the barrel turns out to be a stinker, hence the test shoot. It looks good to me and a gunsmith who bore-scoped it said it looked decent but I know you can't judge a barrel until you actually shoot it.

That's a lot better looking than the first job. Now when you shoot the rifle if the first result isn't what you would like, it may not be the barrel. You said the stock has cracks in it which may effect the accuracy and may need repaired and bedded. Also it may be necessary to try different make and weights of bullets to establish what that barrel likes. Then fine tune with different powders. If your not a reloader then your limited to what's available in factory loads. Good luck and let us know how it shoots.

      mhutchinson,
The proof will be in the shooting, I second Leatherman's advice to repair the stock first.

Thanks for the update. I was thinking about the dilemma and decided I would have to do as you did. It appears to have come out quite nicely. Please keep us in the loop. Packy
