  • C. Freyer Dresden. Stalking rifle.

    Just bought this beautiful rifle. Caliber 11x40 R M Target / 10.5x40 R Scheibenbüchse / 10.5x40 R Schützen Werder-Braun / 10.5x40 R Swiss Vetterli / 10.5x40 R Target
    http://www.municion.org/11/11x40RmTarget.htm

Anyone have any information about this gunsmith?
No proofmarks, only a S under the barrel.

The rifle is a pretty legitimate true copy of the Mod. 1871 Mauser. Any rifle made before early 1893 wouldn't have proof marks. The "S" under the barrel might mean the barrel was made at the Schilling forge . C. Freyer in Dresden likely marketed the rifle made for them by someone in Suhl or Zella- Mehlis. It looks like a fun project to load for.

      Hello

      Sigbred,
the below is what I was able to find.

In 1874 there is to my knowledge no Büchsenmacher Freyer in Dresden but in 1875 a “Freyer, C. Herm., Büchsenmacher b. Garde-Reiter-Reg., Wiesenthorstr. 8. Fl. E. pt.” turns up. There are only two other gunsmiths listed in Dresden for that year, Hänisch and Ulbricht, so I believe I’m right on the spot with the above Freyer.

      In 1890 “Freyer, C. Herm., Büchsenmacher b. Gardereiter-Reg., (Allgem. Ehz.), Albertst.,[adt] Kavalleriekas., St.-Nr. 265.” was still active.

1891 is a tad iffy but I could only find Brocks, Eidner and Gründig listed as gunsmiths in Dresden for that year and in Kavallerie-Kaserne 265 there is a “Büchsenmacher Sauer” so it would seem Freyer had retired by now.

By 1892 it’s a dead cert that Freyer was retired – “Freyer, C. Herm., pens. Milit. – Büchsenm., (Allgem. Ehrz.), Sebnitzerstr. 19 II.”

Also: my computer tells me the GGCA-Board-site is not safe.

EDIT: forgot, Oskar Sauer it was who occupied Kavallerie-Kaserne 265 in 1891.

      Kind regards
      Peter

        Peter,
I told Jon Spencer that your "security" said the GGCA site is not safe and he asked if you would send him a screen shot of that statement so he can look into it.

          Mike,
there's no indication of warning today but I'll keep the screenshot-plan in mind for next time.

          Sigbred,
I was wrong. There was one other Büchsenmacher but Hänisch and Ulbricht in Dresden in 1875. A Büchsenmacher Riese, possibly Niese. I still believe the Freyer I found is the Freyer you're looking for.

          Kind regards
          Peter
