I have finely got the 22lr schuetzen I have been lusting after, I will post pictures later. The name on the barrel is Ernst Peter, Weisbaden, any information would be appreciated. The rifle has an eye piece that has optics in it. By turning the knurled ring it brings the front post into focus. My crude drawing is a representation of the small etched mark on the back of the eye piece. Any information would be appreciated.

Axel has written about these devices before and he may, this time. The schuetzen rules don't allow optical sights, but these devices are allowed because they permit older shooters to continue competing by allowing the sights to be seen, while not providing magnification. I understand the need.

W. & H. Seibert was an old, since 1866, optics maker in Wetzlar, from 1917 a subsisiary of Leitz (Leica cameras). Though they were famous for their microscopes, they also made "optical aiming aids" for target shooting. The Seibert – Diopterscheibe model 1933 served the same purpose like the earlier specialised shooting glasses, that are even used today by serious target shooters, correcting far- or near- sightedness of the eye. The original description in the 1933 "Waffenschmied" advises adjusting the focus to the target, as the front sight will stay in focus over a wide range of adjustment.

Thanks Axel, I went to Biggi’s web site as found the period add, and with the aid of an internet translator found out what the lever on the back of the eye piece does.

Here is mine. It came on a 4mm Zimmerstutzen. I guess you have discovered the lever is for going from a clear to yellow lens. The wheel controls the 5 aperture sizes. I replaced mine with a standard disc, as this disc was no longer clear. I took it completely apart in order to clean it, but haven't put it back.

I prefer the standard disc for shooting.

I too find the sight dim, most likely needs cleaning, but then I am going in for cataract surgery tomorrow. It is on what I believe is a 22 rifle built in Germany by hand as it is not a production piece. I will post some photos in the next few days.

Good luck with your surgery tomorrow. These are almost always successful and non painful now. When I had mine, I didn't even need to take an aspirin. Cataracts progress slowly and you hardly notice it; but the surgery will result in immediate noticeable improvement. When it's all over, you will be happy you had it done.

I am following up once again regarding these iris apertures. Just after I ordered the eye piece I found a complete RPA Trakker rear sight on Simpson LTD with the exact diopter adjustable iris that I had ordered. The sight was a little pricey but I wanted one quickly so I ordered that one too. It came earlier today and I just clamped it onto my Martini Cadet to see how it worked. Looking through it was like getting a brand new eye! I honestly could not believe the difference. I could focus the front sight and the target into a crisp sight picture. I am still astounded by how good it is. Well worth the money spent and I am preparing to shoot it as is just to test before I mount it permanently. You old timers out there may want to take a good look at one of these. Amazing.

Nearly the final report on this thread. First, I must apologize that I am not posting a picture of a German gun, it is a BSA Cadet in 32-20 WCF. But the sight is a German device so I guess it should be OK. It is a Gehmann diopter sight with and adjustable 1-1/2 power optical lens. This one has the correct adapter for the Parker-Hale sight base already mounted on the rifle. As I said before, I cannot believe the difference. Now I only have to get out to the range and try it. I finally shot the rifle today with the optical peep on it. Same load and distance that produced a seven inch shotgun pattern was reduced to 1-1/4" for five shots. What a difference being able to see can make! I don't know if this would help everyone but it certainly helped me. Thanks very much to yamoon for posting about an optical peep initially or I never would have gone looking. Diz
