Any fine gun is subject to such dangers if used for it's intended purpose.
Any S&S Mausers are quite rare, especially those made for the US market originally. But collector value is reduced by the post-WW2 US rework.
Any .30-06 factory load that is not +P. Apparently the rifle was proofed for the original 06 150gr load. Modern factory loads develop less pressure.

Very nice Axel, maybe one day I can get my hands on a few like that. Hopefully the rework didn't kill the value to bad. Either way I don't intend on selling. It has been fun learning from you and others.

          Thanks again

            dstone,
I was interested in the markings on your rifle, because I have an Oberndorf Mauser, 30-06, imported into the US by Hans Tauscher ( Mauser Rep.), also ca. 1912. Mine is one of the few "Armee Models" imported by him. It has a round barrel and single trigger. The receiver ring has the Mauser address, and under the address, US 1906. This is why I wondered where the US 1906 stamp was located on yours. On the left side of the barrel, it is stamped 7,6 S. Mauser differentiated between the 06 and 03 by stamping the S( spitzer) after 7,6 for the 06 and N (normal) for the 03. I believe they may have used different rifling pitch( I didn't check) and I'm sure the sights were different. Mine is marked "Made in Germany" on the floor plate, while yours is marked "Made in Prussia". Suhl was in Prussia, and Oberndorf was not. If you use normal care, you won't damage your rifle. Mine came to me drilled and tapped, bolt handel ground to clear a scope, and the rear sight milled off. A recoil pad is missing and it has Springfield (or Krag) sling swivels; these might have been "period" modifications, but I still wish it hadn't been modified.
            Axel,
I also thought the 65 must have been for the 03 version. I had a Winchester mod 1895 in 30-03, the previous owner had used it with 06 ammo, so I guess the datum line was in the same place or close. I was going to Viet Nam soon and not that interested in it, so I sold it. I let a 280 Ross get away at the same time. I guess the lesson is, don't sell the interesting guns, you might not get killed after all.
            Mike

                David,
No, those are enough. I'm a pretty poor photographer, myself, so your photos are good by comparison. BTW, I do hope you hunt with your rifle and enjoy it. I try to hunt with and shoot all my rifles, although recent physical problems has caused me to fall behind in that endeavor.

                    David,
OK, I'll do that. It might take a while, I will have to learn to use the new camera or have a friend take one for me( he often does it for me). PM me your email address. We expect some weather from the Hurricane, that may slow me down. Ya'll might have some too.

One thing that is very simple to remember about Sauer long guns: if it says SON in the Sauer legend it was intended to be exported to an English speaking country. Thanks for the discussion Axel, Mike and David. Best regards, Jim Cate
