First shots with the Scout. Was dropping one in the top with the magazine in the first detent. On the first shot the loaded magazine dropped out on the ground! I grabbed the spare and showed that gong what for. But how embarrassing with my best shooting buddy watching. Glad it wasn't a grizzly or some such aggressive critter. At least I can run faster than my Buddy. Anyone know what the magazine drop syndrome is caused by? I heard that when new the 10 rounders would drop from the spare mag holder. But that was TEN rounds in the SPARE not 5 under the bolt. Also it was 180 grain bullets that dropped from the spare and I'm shooting 150 gr Federal SPs. Packy

I don't know what causes the malfunctions of your Steyr Scout. But such shit is bound to happen if you buy one of the "new, up to date" rifles made of plastics, stampings and computer engineered parts. I've seen similar failures happen with Steyrs, "Sauer & Sohns" and Blasers.

When I was attending the Hunting Instructors School, a Steyr Rep. came as a guest and was giving a sales talk about the new( early 1970s) Steyr rifle. One of the major points of pride was the new plastic magazine that replaced the spool magazine of the MS. To illustrate the guality of the magazine( made from "unbreakable" plastic), he threw it to the floor " with gusto". It broke into many pieces with the whole class watching. His section of the instruction ended abruptly.

Mike, about those Steyr "Mannlichers" and their Macrolon plastic trigger guards/magazine holder: They were pretty tough when new in the 1970s. But now, some years later, the softeners have evaporated from that plastic. The assemblies now crack for no good reason. even when stored in the cabinet. There is a man in Austria, outside the Steyr factory, who makes replacements milled from aluminum alloy, see http://www.egun.de/market/item.php?id=7101652 . He also offers spare parts for Mannlicher – Schoenauers, the original ones, http://mannlich-schönauer.com/
