  • Hi Everyone, Recently inherited a J.P. Sauer & Sohn

Need help identifying this 12 gauge that my great uncle left to me. Appreciate all the help I can get.

We would appreciate a sideview of the receiver to determine if it has upper or lower or both sears. It appears to be a Model 14, and from the serial number I would have to say it was made in the 1912-14 period. More photos would be appreciated. Thanks, Jim Cate

Do you have the forearm? The photos didn't show it and they are missing more often than we like.

Happy you have the forearm, I'm guessing Jim Cate will be back shortly.

yeah, me too. Guessing it would be difficult to replace. Thanks for being a part of this thread.

Kaya225, Your Sauer is a Model 8 with upper sears only. Interestingly, a person could order just about anything he wanted on a Model 8 (better wood, more checkering, engraving, etc.) if he desired any of these. You have a nice Sauer, so enjoy! Stay well, Jim

                              Kaya225,
The crown S on the barrels means the gun was proofed for shot. A crown W means any barrel it is found on is choked, but the amount of constriction isn't shown. The NITRO means it was proofed with smokeless power. The crown U is the mark for a "View" proof, which is a detailed inspection, including verification of dimensions, after definitive proof. The 12 is a circle means it had a standard( for the time) 12 ga. chamber. At the time, the standard was a 65(67?)mm chamber, which is shorter than the current standard length of 70mm ( 2 3/4"). The 13/1 is the diameter of the bore ahead of the chamber, expressed in gauge measurement. This equates to about 18.26mm. The large crown and the so called "Wildman" are not proof marks, rather, they are Sauer's marks. There was no photo of the proof loads( amount & type of smokeless powder), so it was proofed after 1913; but there was also no date, so it was proofed before 1923.
                              Mike
