German hunting laws require a minimum bullet energy of 1000 Joule at 100 meters for use on roe deer. As the .222 Rem is usually catloged with 1006 to 1094 Joule, it is regarded as the smallest legal roe deer cartridge. All other hoofed game has a legal minimum 6.5mm = .25" bullet diameter and 2000 Joule at 100 meters. In the 1960s to 70s many German hunters used it on roe deer, but found it marginal with not so perfect hits. As it is illegal for boar or any other deer species and the numbers of wild boar have exploded, most German hunters now use more substantial calibers for all "big game" hunting and restrict .222 use to foxes and target shooting.

Thank you all for the personal information and background.
The maker information would have been virtually inaccessible, and having people with the personal experience as to purpose and hunting laws puts a reason behind the build.
Each of my guns gets an information sheet now and hopefully that information will stick with them through their next caretaker. I am looking forward to having it back in the field this fall.

      Vielen dank.
