Gustav Genschow 6mm/5.4mm Rifle - Shooting Report
I thought since there was some discussion of the shells that would shoot in this gun I would report back on what I found. The following is from around 25 yards using the rear bed side of my pickup as a rest. This is with iron sights and 73-year-old trifocal eyes.
1) First I shot some CCI CB 22-short sub-sonics (29gr.-710fps). They grouped well (about 1.5") and punched clean holes thru paper.
2) Then I shot some Remington Golden 22-short high velocity (29gr.-1095fps). They also shot well (about 1.5") with clean holes.
3) Then I shot some CCI 22LR standard velocity (40gr-1070fps). They grouped poorly (about 3") and a couple of them tore ragged holes.
All shells chambered, extracted, and ejected well. None of the casings showed any irregularities. The firing pin tip is round and leaves a half-circle on the rim, but there were no FTF's.
The poor performance of the long rifle shells reinforces what Mike Ford said - "Note that if you do decide to try 22 LR ammo, the rifling pitch will likely be too slow to stabilize 40gr bullets.".
I really wanted to try some 22longs, but didn't have any in my stock and couldn't find any in town. I'll pick some up next week and report back if anyone's interested.
