  • help IDing a BBF

Saw a BBF today marked OSZM that I am considering making an offer on. 16 over what looks like 7.7 x 57. Looks to have passed proof at ZM in Feb. of 1915. Has the original optics marked Sirius 4x32. Any help Iding maker/seller and best guess on rifle caliber. I am thinking 8x57r. but 7.7 seems a little tight. Any any info on scope would also be very appreciated.

    mikev,
I don't recognize the mark OSZM, but someone else here may. If you can get the gun, and post photos of the gun and all markings, maybe we can give you more information. The 7.7x57 most likely indicates the gun is chambered for 8x57IR, as you surmised. However, it is also possible the chambering is 8x57R/360, as they would be marked the same way. These proof marks do not identify the nominal caliber, rather they show the bore(not groove or bullet) diameter and case length. You are correct that 7.7mm is a little bit tight, but we see such barrels from time to time. To tell the 8x57IR from 8x57R/360 is pretty easy; a 30-06 will enter the chamber if 8x57IR, but not if 8x57r/360. On the other hand, a 30-30 or 32Win. Spec. would pretty closely fit an 8x57R/360 chamber, but would obviously be too small for 8x57IR. BTY, it is a major "plus" that it has a scope already mounted.

      Mike,
Thanks! That is helpful as to determining the caliber. I can not get photos at this time but I can ask the seller to use the method you have shared to help determine what the rifle is chambered in. I agree that the scope being mounted is a real plus and that is one of the reasons I am interested.
Hopefully someone here will know a little about the maker/retailer.
      Again thanks!

You must be close, I'm 20 miles north of Auburn.

Nope. Up in Ohio. I have family in Montgomery, most of whom are Tide fans. My cousin just retired a few years ago as chancelor of AUM thus my connection.
Anyway, I always appreciate reading your helpful responses to others and enjoying cheering along with you for Auburn.

            mikev,
Oh well, I just thought if you were close enough, I could "stake" you to a round of 8x57IR and 8x57R/360 ammo to check the gun with. I'm sorry you have to endure the shame of having Alabama fans in your family. BTW, I noticed in this morning's newspaper that "Rolling the Oaks" at Toomer's Corner was voted the best sports tradition in the nation.
