  • what brand is this 9.3mm projectile?

I was recently given some new projectiles to add to my 9.3mm projectile collection and this one was described as 200 gr Speer. Nowhere can I find any reference to Speer making a .366 (9.3mm) 200 gr projectile.

It has a silvertip round nose. (non-magnetic)

Measures .365 (as many 9.3mm projectiles do).
    .986" in length.
    200 grains.

    Can anyone identify this please.

Pure speculation on my part but those look like Winchester Silvertips. I think pre-WWII Winchester did load for a couple 9.3's. They may have post war but I don't know.

      Dusty,
I'm given to understand that Speer, one or more times, contracted with someone in Europe to produce bullets for some ammo company, and that the 250 grain bullets available in the US at one time was from an over run. Perhaps they produced 200 grain bullets for someone and had no substantial over run. On the other hand, within the last couple of years I have seen Winchester 8x57IRS and 9.3x74R ammo in Winchester boxes intended for the European market. Maybe Sharps 4590 has a point.

Thanks Mike. The first question that comes to mind is where have I ever seen a Speer projectile with a silver-tip. Never, but I am quite aware that I have not seen everything. Winchester is the manufacturer that comes to most people's minds because of the range of silver-tip loads and the period they churned them out for. But, did Winchester ever produce a 9.3mm projectile? In their current factory 9.3x62 load they use a Hornady projectile and as you would expect, 286gr.

I also collect 9.3x62 cartridges and have a significant european content going back well before WWII, and no silvertips. And I am yet to see such a cartridge in someone else's collection. But of course if this projectile was made for the 9.3x72/74 or another 9.3mm cartridge then that would also explain why I have not seen it before. But it does exist!

        Cheers

          Dusty9.3x62,
I doubt very much that it was made for the 9.3x72R. While the weight is OK, the "72R" factory ammo is usually loaded with "Express" type bullets to account for differing groove diameters. Other possibilities include the 9.3x57. which is still popular in northern Europe. There are newer 9.3's like the .370 Sako(9.3x66 Sako), as well as other older fairly popular 9.3 cartridges like 9.3x53-9.3x53R Swiss and 9.3x64. The standard bullet weight for the Swiss cartridge was 200 grains, but a 200 grain high velocity loading of the others seems to make sense. Maybe you could contact the person that gave you the bullets, maybe he still has the box. The facts that the bullets seem to be silver tips, and I have seen Winchester 9.3x 74R ammo is hanging on to my mind. I would not be surprised, at all, if you find out they are Winchester.
