  • Mauser 98 Edelweiss

I have what appears to be a real nice Mauser in 8mm. I have very little information though. I would like to know when this was made and for who. The floor plate and trigger guard is nicely engraved with a deer and some edelweiss and also has the initials P.W. Why the stamped trigger guard?

This rifle is a sporterised 98k WW2 military rifle of very late, 1944 – 45 production, evidenced by the stamped magazine – triggerguard assembly and the lack of the bolt guide rib (visible in one of the photos you posted originally). Post-WW2 it was sporterized by a good gunsmith. Apparently it retains the original military barrel and rear sight. The gunsmith changed the bolt handle, claw mounted the Hensoldt scope, installed the double set trigger, restocked it, had it engraved by a good craftsman and refinished it for someone "PW", possibly a GI. I tend to call it a rather upgrade "Cigarette Mauser".

      MaDuce,
Don't worry about the stamped trigger guard/floor plate, it is a nice rifle, enjoy it.

I agree with Mike. It is a nice sporter. Use it and enjoy. Alas, the famous and coveted "Springfield Sporters" by "Name" gunmakers like Wundhammer, Hoffmann, Griffin & Howe and others are nothing else than sporterized military rifles.
