  • Scope Question

Going thru the rifle that I mentioned in an earlier post and have some questions on its Gerard scope. On the top of the scope there is a flat plate held by a screw. Does this plate have a function and how do you utilize it?

Yes, the three screws and the black central plate clamp the white ring with the range markings in place. Zero in the rifle at 100 meters for elevation by turning the whole turret after loosening the little clamping screw (not original here). Clamp turret in place again. Loosen the three screws on top. now you can turn the top, outer ring until the "1" mark coincides with the line on the turret base. Lock the adjustment by tightening the 3 screws. You may use this in two ways: For checking the elevation adjustment for accidental turning. Or you may dial up the turret for the other ranges, 200, 300, 400 and so on meters, provided you use the original German load the scope was calibrated for.

Thank you, Yes the set screw is far from original - How about the square plate to the rear of the turret, does it have a function?

It's the focus adjustment. The screw goes into an inner tube holding lens(es). The screw rides a slanting cut in the outer scope tube, allowing some fore-aft movement of the inner tube. The plate merely covers the cut. Loosen the screw and push it left/right until the reticle is in focus. Retighten screw.

Again Thank You, Since the scope is in claw mounts contemplating having it refurbished. Any suggestions for firms that do this and what I should expect to pay?

            Nutmeg,
I had a new cross hair ( 3 post not available) installed in a Nickel and had it cleaned by "Iron Sight Inc." ( www. ironsightinc.com). They normally work on American Scopes, but can also do some European scopes. Gerard is not on the list of those they have worked on, but it is also not on the list if those they will not work on. You will have to ask them. Be aware that the minimum cost will be over $100 and the lead time will be over a year, and you have to send a check in advance. If my scope had been useable I wouldn't have sent it.
