  • Columbia Schützenverein Event : 4-6 August

    Our next shoot is scheduled for 4-6 August. As posted on the ASSRA forum;

    "It is coming up fast. Events for 22RF, CF Schuetzen, Big Bore rifles. Bench for group, bench for score, offhand. There are usually side matches, such as "rook rifle", German rifle, military rifle, or whatever else competitors can think up, in addition to classic "picture targets".
    Our shoots are held at the Thurmont (MD) Conservation and Sportsman's Club, a little ways south of Gettysburg PA. Driving directions and other details can be found at <TCANDSC.ORG>, or by PM-ing me.
    Entry fees are $15/day plus $1/target. Free lunch, including those big sausages on the grill, and beverages. Medal prizes for all events. Shooting starts at 9AM each day, but matches are not squadded, i.e., you can come at any time and shoot any target on any relay.

      "Gut Schuss" would be the perfect term.

          It is an Schützenfest I really look forward to and has been growing over the past year. We now have more folks showing up and more events. The events with center fire and big bore at 200 yards are pretty competitive, as well as .22 at 100. Now we have the German Rifle event at 100 and are continuing with the Military Rifle at 100.

          I won the German Rifle event using a Martini Schützen and placed in the Military Rifle event using a borrowed Swiss Peabody. This time I will use a newly obtained "Prussian capture" Peabody in 43 Spanish. Will try the 200 yard CF event with an Aydt Schützen I mounted a Lyman 20x STS on, and I will again compete in the .22 event with a Schützen mounted with a Unertl 16x.

          We have a great time! Brats for lunch and after the rifles are packed away, a few adult beverages and a cigar.

              Another member from here, Leatherman, attended the Schützenfest as well, but due to a should injury could only compete in the .22 matches. He placed 2nd in the 100yd .22 5-shot for group match, using a Haenel .22 with a Unertl scope.

              I, much to my surprise ( because I am a lousy offhand shooter) placed 1st in the "Germanic" Schützen Rifle event, which was an aggregate of 10 shots offhand and 10 bench. I won by only 1 point with the Schützenmeister right behind me.

              I placed 2nd in the single action military rifle event, using a "Prussian captured" 1870 Peabody in 43 Spanish I just picked up a few months ago.

              Here is a quick view of my Martini Schützen I picked up at a reasonable price at Baltimore this year, and used in the last 2 matches. A pre-1900 rifle that was rebarreled in Feb. of 1937 in 8.15x46R.
