  • Making 8x57IR brass from 8x57IRS

I'm considering buying a lovely Robert Schuler Combo 16ga/8x57IR from Double Gun HQS. I see several available options for .318 bullets, including Hawk, Woodleigh, cast and resizing down more common .323 bullets.

8x57IR brass seems to be unavailable as a component, and currently only S&B offers a (single) factory load.

Is there any reason why 8x57IR cannot be made from 8x57IRS by simply necking it down and reaming the inside of the case neck?

I don't know why not. Once it's sized check the neck dimension, there is a chance it might not need anything.

I usually make my 8x57 I and 8x57 IR cases from 8x57 IS and 8x57 IRS brass respectively by using my "8mm Mauser" = 8x57 IS LEE fl sizing die. I simply exchanged the neck expander against a home made, .317" diameter one. No neck reaming necessary. BTW, I use the same die for neck sizing 8x57 R 360 brass.

        Mike,
I also do what Axel does, for the same calibers plus 8x72R, except I found that with my Lyman dies, I don't need to use an expander. I just de-prime, by hand, with a shop made punch. You might not need to use .318" bullets. If you make up a cartridge, and fire it in the rifle, if a .321" or even .323" bullet fits easily into the fired(unsized) case, you can use that diameter bullet. Also, if you are one that wants cases with the correct headstamp, it is easy enough to remove the "S".
