  • Columbia Schützenverein 2017 schedule

    I have been attending these events for the past few years, and enjoy them tremendously. Great fun and great comradeship. Here is the write-up of the shoots from the ASSRA forum;

"Our shoots near Thurmont MD are set for 14-15-16 APRIL (yes, Easter Sunday!), 4-5-6 AUGUST, and 6-7-8 OCTOBER. There are events for RF at 100 yd, and CF Schuetzen and "Big-Bore" at 200 yd, as well as a classic picture target for each class of rifle. Entry fee is $15/day + $1/target. Free lunch and beverages. PM for more details and/or to get on the mailing list.

    R.G.Christensen, Schuetzenmeister"

Here is an example of the fun events we do. The 100 yard .22 RF bench rest scoped "hit the eye" event. I just lost this one by 2 mm, or so it was determined.

I always had to borrow someone else's rifle, but I just mounted a 16x Unertl on my .22 Schützen.

We had a nice shoot over the weekend and I was there for 2 of the 3 days. Always a great time. Informal, fun, and with good company. You can shoot the courses of fire you choose to, and when you want to. Just enter the scores on the appropriate score sheet.

Here is a shot of "Leatherman" with one of his double rifles. Another of the Schützenmeister shouldering a new Martini Feuerstutzen I picked up.

A few views of the various rifles which folks bring. Obviously, with the event being ASSRA sanctioned, there are a number of non-German single action rifles. With a fair number of Lyman/ Unertl scopes.

I use a "Prussian capture" 1870 Spanish 43 Peabody in the "military rifle" event.

There will again be 3 3-day events next year. Always seeking more folks to come out.

The next 3-day match will be 26-28 April. Only single action rifles. Informal as you shoot what and when you want over the 3 days. The standard events are:

              - 200 yard Schützen from bench with scope German 25 ring target (ASSRA). Shooting for score, as well as group size.
              - 200 yard big bore (over .40), iron sights, bench, for score and group. Black powder or smokeless.
              - 100 yard .22 rifle, scoped, bench, score and group.

Other side events are usually (open to what folks want to do):
              - German rifle (Austrian, Swiss, or German Feuerstutzen), 100 yds, iron sights, bench, offhand, group, and score.
              - Military single action. 100 or 200, bench, prone, offhand, kneeling (one style or combination).
              - 100 yard .22 rifle, bench, off hand, etc.

Other side events can be done if enough shooters want to do it. Medals are given out for each discipline. I am now the assistant Schützenmeister and my major goal for the future is to expand (both participants and events). The shoots are informal and focused on fun for those who show up. I go for at least 2 days usually, but this time will attend all 3 days. We break for lunch which consists of Brats over a fire.

Hope to see some new faces out there, as in my opinion, this is a very unique and seldom encountered opportunity!

I first attended these just over 3 years ago, and it provided me the spark to get interested in the whole single action hobby, and Fuerstutzen. Of all my shooting disciplines this event is the most enjoyable.
