  • Hello from N.E.Florida

Hello to all. My name is Joe and I've been retired 10 years from a LEO career. Interest in German guns go way back. I have a Zimmerstutzen front loader that has been in the family for the last 60 years. It was one of my Dad`s favorite conversation pieces. As is common with them the rear sight was missing. When it passed to me I did a search and found one on Fleabay. Contacted ISS and bought the pellets, caps and targets. Finally after being a wall hanger all those years it was back in action. Having grown up shooting matches with a 22 target rifle as member of an NRA club I was truly amazed with the accuracy of the Zimmer. Wish I could have had it for some of those competitions. Recently acquired another one. This one is also a front loader 4mm but is not in working order. The cocking lever appears to not be engaging the hammer spring and the triggers will not set. Have searched but can find no information on the internals of one of these . I do a good bit of gunsmith work restoring old Winchesters and double guns but am hesitate to opening this one up without some idea of what to expect. If someone knows of a source for a schematic or has experience with them I would sure appreciate the information.
Other than the two Zimmers I have numerous original and custom mausers. Never one to pass up an odd ball caliber to reload for a 30 Newton and 7x61 Sharpe &Hart are among them. A combination 2 barrel set O/U built on a Merkel action 16/16 and 16 /270 Win is one of my favorites to hunt with. Glad to be part of the forum and hope I can add to my knowledge and be a contributor.

If you provide the name of the maker and/or a photo, I might be able to provide a patent drawing.

Meant to mention when I posted the photos that adding the new one was to have another rifle to shoot in impromptu matches that we hold from time to time. I frequent an old pool hall on the weekends and shoot snooker with several other Septuagenarians .Have enough room to set up at 15 meters. Between games, while we are waiting our turn at the table, we shoot targets. Of course in keeping with history, adult malted beverages are consumed . No steins yet but cans are not allowed. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday afternoon .

Joe, there are a number of variants to this basic action design, of course, and the seller's name has not turned up a definite answer yet. Judging from the photos, it may use the same cocking method as the Büchel Meister employed. I will keep digging and see if I can find an exact match for your gun. Having trouble uploading the drawing right now, but will try again.

That gives me some idea Steve. It would appear that someone has been there before me observing the buggered screws from not using a proper turnscrew. I`m hopeful that the parts are there and perhaps misaligned but am fearful that it is a broken hammer spring. If so will have to go through my stash and see if one can be fashioned to fit. The other Zimmer is not going to be of assistance due to it being a totally different action. I`ll shoot some photos when I get it torn down and perhaps that would help someone in the future with a similar issue. Thanks for your efforts.

A big sigh of relief. When I attempted to remove the lever the hammer fell with a loud click. Hooray! No broken spring. Reattached the lever and it cocked just fine. The set trigger was the culprit. Pulled the triggergroup and found the sear for the front trigger was frozen in place. Disassembled and polished surfaces to 2,000 grit and lubricated. Works fine now. Thanks for looking for the diagram.
