  • New guy from Wa with Drilling.

Hi, I am from Wa state I like the old German Guns, But can not afford high end stuff,But I am a 01 FFL and a Gun Parts dealer so once in a while in the rusty busted junk i can afford i find stuff i try and fix up and here is one, I bought it at a Police auction for less the $150 it did not have a forearm nor the hammers, and one of the tumblers was broken. So I traded a friend of mine a retired gunsmith a few parts and he fixed the tumblerDSCF3236.JPGDSCF3235.JPGDSCF3227.JPGDSCF3232.JPGDSCF3228.JPG and made a forearm and hammers i had work,he also made 12, 9.3 by 72R shells for me from 30-30 brass run threw a 38-55 die and then necked down with a 357 die. My plan is the Take a set old rings and try and mill them out to fit into the claw mount bases, and i will re blue the hammers and the forearm metal shortly. I will post update, So hi to every one.

Welcome gunparts and congrats on your acquisition! You got a trunk with it too? If so that's cool!!! I believe your drilling is a Franz Jaeger as evidenced by the 'Herold' trademark. I also stand willing to be corrected as my knowledge base is pretty thin. A better picture of the proof marks would reveal more info I believe. Wish you luck in getting a forearm and the iron for it.

I don't see a date on the Franz Jaeger drilling but it was made in Suhl post 1912.

      Cheers,

        Gunparts,
"You done well son". Franz Jaeger is a well respected name. Also he was the grandfather of our founder Dietrich Apel. You can buy factory ammo for your drilling or new brass. Cases made from 30-30 cases will be way too short, and extending them with a 38 S&W spec.case as Askins suggests doesn't work verry well. Many 9.3x72Rs have barrels with about .358" groove dia. which makes bullets pretty easy. Other diameters can be accomodated though.I reccommend you "slug" your barrel to find out. Check the websites of Huntington Die Specialties, Graf and Sons,Buffalo Arms, and J & G sales for ammo/brass. Good luck. By the way, welcome aboard.

Very nice purchase. It is unfortunate most police in my area choose to destroy any guns and will not sell. I remember getting an invite to one about 2 hours north which I attended and bought several nice guns. The money was slated to be used to buy electronic equipment for the force.

If you have access to a mill you may be able to make a set of rings. I will warn you, they are not hard, but very very time consuming to get just right. Be sure to read as much as you can about them before attempting your first. I bought several pairs of fitted rings and bases to study the fit and function priori to attempting myself.
