I have a J.P. Sauer & Sohn 12 Gauge Box Lock Shotgun. 28 1/4" barrels, 2 3/4" chambers, choked full and extra full, extractors, double triggers, Greener cross bolt and cocking indicators, blued barrels, case colored, scroll engraved receiver, checkered walnut stock and forearm and serrated buttplate, shotgun is in excellent condition and has been well cared for, 95% barrel blue, 70% case colors, mirror bores, tight action, nicely figured walnut with scattered light handling marks, checkering, good carry gun that weighs a well-balanced. Writing on the right barrel is "SPECIAL -GEWEHR" with four interlocked rings by it. Writing on left barrel is "J.P. SAUER & SOHN SUHL"

Can you help me with what model this is? Royal? what year it was made?

Thanks for any help you can give me!!

Hey Drew...no sir, I can't help you with your double gun but do want to take the opportunity to welcome you to German Guns. I'm confident the guru's will be along and can tell you nearly everything about your Sauer & Sohn.

Looks like it experienced proof in September 1963 & it wears the 1st quality proof. So it does wear the interlaced/interlocked 4 Rings atop the tubes? That was Russia's IZH crucible 4 Ring Special Gewehr Lauf Stahl SG1 50A response to Krupp's 3 Ringe Stahl. It may follow along the same recipe as Krupp's 3 Ringe Stahl?? Examples like this are work-horses & a similar one from about the same time frame is my choice for dispatching stuff most of the time.

      Cheers,

        Raimey.
Thanks for the information. I thought that 963 was maybe month and year. Thx for confirming. I added a pic of the rings a top the tubes.

Izhevsky "Four Ringe" steel 50A had/has an elastic limit 55 kg/sq.mm and failure limit 80 kg/sq.mm. Does it have SG1 or 50A adjacent to the Four Ringe stamp or on the underside between the flats & forend hanger?

          Cheers,

1971 Field & Stream J.P. Sauer & Sohn Royal Advert

Royal modell was a designation of the West German Sauer efforts.

Thank you Mike and Raimey, great site! I grew up with a number of german guns in the house and always enjoyed shooting them. so I had to have a J.P. Sauer and Sohn SxS!

                Raimey,
It does have the Lauf Stahl SG1 on the right barrel. I also has two triggers, did the royals have two triggers?
