Packmule,
8x68S is a very good, modern ,caliber originated immediately before the war. This is a good find for the caliber, but the claw mount base being let into the reciever ring is a concern. If it cuts through the ring, it would not pass proof (view proof) now, unless effectively hidden. Of course, if it's in the US, it wouldn't be submitted for reproof. Since it passed shooting proof once, I think if I had the chance, I would try it. A rifle in 8x68S is one of my "one of these days"projects( I have barrel, action, stock, reamer, mounts, etc, set aside), so my opinion might be biased.

Very rare and highly desirable item by a renowned Suhl rifle maker! The 8x68S cartridge was, contrary to popular belief, not a Schüler Invention, but developed and brought out by RWS in 1939 and adopted by Mauser, Schüler and others.. The prewar factory loads were loaded to such an overall length that a Magnum length Action was needed. So this Schüler rifle was most likely built on an original Mauser, Oberndorf, commercial Magnum length action. When RWS revived the 8x68S in the 1960s, they shortened the cartridge over all length by seating the bullets much deeper, so the "new" factory loads fit into the standard length M98 Mauser action. True Mauser Magnum length actions were not available any more post-1945.
