  • Sauer & sohn 16 gauge Hammer gun: Project

I am Sam Ogle, Lincoln, Ne.
I have acquired a J.P.Sauer & Sohn, Suhl16 Gauge Hammer gun, with heavy engraving, Bernard Damascus barrels, and the traditional swivels, cheek piece.

It is very rough, and a project. I believe this was a WWI war trophy for some American G.I. It belonged to a great nephew who didn't know much about it.
The first problem, is someone must have fell while carrying it, and bent the barrels a bit right where the sling attachment is. So, I assume whoever it was, fell while the gun was in the sling. Gunsmith Kirk Merrington in Texas thinks he can straighten them if they are not too bad.
There is no gold, but that incredible deep, heavy engraving of birds, dogs, stag, etc.
The hammers are engraved, and match as well, with engraved screws.
A bit of research says the gun was made prior to 1854, when Sauer began using Krupp Steel barrels. You fellows know more than I, so forgive me if I am a few years off.
Anyway, it may take a couple years and a couple thousand, but it is a wonderful, beautiful, quick handling 16 gauge that is not "clunky" at all.
Any suggestions as to gunsmiths, etc. will surely be appreciated.

    Sincerely, Sam Ogle, Lincoln, NE

Is it a breech or muzzle loading?

Do you have any pictures to post?

I would suggest, before you put money into it, to take some good digital pictures of it, especially the markings above and below the wood, and send them here and to inquiries@germanguns.com. If it is a muzzle loader and you want to shoot it, you should examine the barrels for pitting and think seriously about having someone competent pull the breech plugs.

It is a breech loading, top lever opening, cartridge gun. I assume 2 1/2" chambers, but haven't got that far yet. I will attempt pictures, but am not even a semi-pro photographer.
It IS a sixteen gauge (snap caps fit)
Barrels say J.P. Sauer & Sohns, Suhl. It is a boxlock, not a sidelock. The sides of the receiver on each side say: "J.P. Sauer & Sohns"

I made a pair of stupid statements: It is a SIDELOCK, not a BOXLOCK. Also, it says J.P. Sauer & Sohn; NOT "Sohns"
May the German collecting community forgive a dumb old man, and may my pursuit of shooting this beauty soon be accomplished.
Thanks, and again, I am sorry for the stupid remarks.

I may have a set of 16 Damascus barrels from a 1890 Guild Hammer gun that might fit-- need dims and photos. My set is an even 30" uncut and has heavy wall thickness at both breech and muzzle- Westley Richards style doll's head and Purdey style double underlugs- with extractor- I also have the lock parts from this gun, and the intact forearm- the buttstock was damaged- it is somewhat like a Purdey "island lock" sidelock gun---

What's the serial number so I can add it to my SAUER database? Then I can tell you when it was made. Jim Cate, author of the Sauer books.....
