  • Greating from Manitoba

    Hi all,
Just got my first German gun this week, a sound by well carried Sauer 16 ga SXS built in 1949. It's a 'common man's' gun. Nothing fancy but I wanted something that was well designed and executed that fit me and would be my grouse gun. I also wanted to be able to tinker with it without worrying about ruining a truly valuable gun. It shoots well and is very tight. The bores have been polished but are only 0.671" (I know I should be talking metric if it is German). It has a couple of minor issues that need addressing but I think I will start another thread for that.

    Looking forward to the discussions!

    Cheers!

    Welcome, White Dog'
I'm sure you will enjoy your gun, we all do. Since it is from 1949, it is likely chambered for 2 3/4" shells. Just to be sure, take the barrels off and be sure it is marked 16-70. If it only has a 16 in a circle w/o the 70, it was chambered for 16 ga 65mm (2 1/2-2 9/16") shells. Either can be handled.

Yup, it is chambered for 70mm. It also has the Suhl material marks and proof marks and the barrels are marked with Krupps Essen which I understand to their 'every day' grade.
