  • new member & question about Otto Bock Berlin BBF

    Hi all,

I am crossposting from the Double Gun BBF Forum in the hope to find a larger audience with my question.
I notice that quite a lot of DGBBF members travel through this forum as well - ours is a small world!

    let me introduce myself:
Name is Gunter, retired, 30 years in England - not far from London; before that some years in the big apple and parts south of it; before that some years in Kenya (it helps if you work for airlines)
    Hometown/country: Dusseldorf, Germany

A couple of years ago I bought (on an auction here in England) a very nice Otto Bock BBF 16/7x57
Unfortunately the 7x57 barrel was at some time drilled out and sleeved with a .22lr barrel
The shotgun barrel has a removable barrel insert (Einstecklauf - 'Princess' Germany) in
.222 Rem. which was fitted by a gunsmith and carries the gun's serial number.
So the gun can be used a a 16b/.22 or a .222/.22lr which in my book makes it a 'Fox Gun' and that is what I use it for.
Nevertheless, the gun was cheap enough and it still is a beautiful piece of gunsmithing and engraving.

The gun has Suhl proofmarks and date code 939 for Sept 1939
but for the Name 'Otto Bock Berlin' on the barrel no makers mark to be found anywhere on the gun.

Serial No is 366005 which seems to be a very high number for Suhl manufacture of the time
Is there some information on serial numbers out there - has anyone come across a (just) pre-WWII Suhl gun with a serial number around 360xxx where the maker is known?

I have posted a number of pictures on DGBBF and can post them here, if it works from Photobucket, where I have stored them all.

    Best regards from England

    Guenter,
I'm afraid you won't be able find any overall information concerning serial numbers in the Suhl area. Even known makers were not always systematic with their numbering system, some having everything in one series, some having different series by model, some seeming to start and stop numbering sequences without rhyme or reason.
