  • Mystery, and Is This A "Parts" Rifle?

My experience level with these rifles is not very extensive but I am growing it. In the case of this one, and based on others I've studied, just when I think I have something "down" I get a curve ball.

Attached is a group of images of yet another rifle, it’s history, type, use case, etc…. I've looked around the site and done some study outside of the site, but haven't gotten very far. It’s because, in short, there are almost no marking of any type. Of the ones I have been able to find, I can't really make much sense.

It appears maybe where I would expect markings they have been brushed away? I just don't have enough skill to know the difference, or all the locations.

So any help there would be greatly appreciated.

Also, unfortunately, I have no bolt.

In the end, I have no use for, or desire to own this rifle. I'm guessing there are people in this community, or elsewhere, who could make good use of it, if even only as parts/backup?

I'm not sure if it's allowed to ask on the site but with no understanding otherwise…

What is a fair asking price in an online auction forum, or person-to-person? If that's not allowed to be done here, please just disregard my asking, and let me know it's NOT OK to do that type of thing. I simply wouldn't do it again...

As always, thanks to all for any help in identification/other help. I’m looking forward to replies/thoughts/questions...

      JustFrank,
This is a little bit of a "stumper". With the lack of markings, we can only say it is a 98 Mauser type rifle in circa WW1 style. I think the action is circa WW2, though and it hasn't been through a proof house. This looks like a cigarette rifle, but cigarette rifles typically weren't missing bolts. Maybe the bolt came here with the rifle, and separated later; maybe to keep children from hurting themselves. In my opinion, the best thing to do would be to put another bolt into it. If you don't want it, you can sell it, but it won't bring very much. Lacking an actual serial number, shipping through a dealer would be a little complicated, I guess the "assembly" number ( 1) could be used( no, it is not the very first Mauser). We have a WTS/WTB section here.

          Hello Mike,

I realize it's been quite some time, but I thought you (and the whole forum) might like some follow up on this rifle...

After some additional research by me, and someone far more knowledgeable than me reviewing the rifle, it seems your assessment was/is probably right.

We are basing this upon the fact that a bolt body has been located, and it has no serial number as well.

So, the current goal for this one is to keep it, identify & locate all parts which are missing, and restore as best we can. That may take some time, but the individual helping me with this rifle is in no big hurry...

Thanks again for all your help.

            JustFrank,
I suggest you try Numrich Arms Gun Parts Corp. or Sarco. You can find these on the internet. I suggest you buy a complete bolt( with return rights, if it doesn't fit-there are a couple different lengths).

              Thank you.

Mike, do you know if there is an easy way to move, or copy a post from one area, to another?

For example: I need to create a post in the WTB/WTS section that has already been in the New Members section. BUT, that is a lot of step-by-step copy/paste.

Is it easier to just create a new post in the WTB/WTS section?

Thanks much for any advice you can give.

                JustFrank,
I am really computer illiterate so I would have to make a new posting myself.
