  • Bohler Barrel

I found this old mauser with a octagon barrel made by Bohler. There are no markings on the receiver or barrel showing caliber. Only thing on barrel is Bohler with a star on each side of name and the letters JS in a circle. How do I find caliber?

The first step is to post photos of the rifle, including photos of all markings, but especially proofmarks. Also, you should make a chamber cast and "slug" the barrel, or have it done. If you are unable to post the Photos, take them anyway and someone( smarter than I) can help you. The "Bohler" means the barrel was made from "Bohler" steel, not necessarily made by them.

      WVBrother,

I know this seems like a simplistic question but have you taken it out of the wood and looked? I am not the expert but there may be markings hidden. Follow Mike's suggestion and take good sharp photos of any marks you do find and post them. Getting a chamber cast and slug by a competent gunsmith would help a lot.

      Thanks & good luck, Diz

To reiterate what Mr.Ford already posted, if you remove the barreled action from the stock you will find proof marks. They will provide the likely information needed to identify a caliber. They will not, necessarily identify the chambering.
