  • Greetings from a newbie :-)

    Howdy folks,
I am recently retired and, with free time on my hands, have begun to pursue things I have long neglected. One of these pursuits involves finding ammunition for two old rifles, and then taking them out and shooting them. Maybe even at some game. Use them for what they were intended for :-).

Many years ago my father gave me two break-open rifles which he had had for years and which had been given to him by his father, who was a U.S. Army officer who had brought them home with him from Europe in the 1940's. Recently I started examining the guns and decided I better take them to a gunsmith to see if they needed some attention and to find out what they are chambered for. The smith was very happy to see these guns. He is a huge aficionado of old German guns. In fact he is the one who pointed me to this site. Anyway, turns out one of them is pretty common for the era... 8x57IR (JR). I've ordered a box of Sellier and Bellot ammunition for it, will take it to the smith to let him test fire it, then hopefully off I'll go :-). The other gun is a different story and that's really why I'm here. I don't want to clog up the "New Members Post Here" forum with a post about finding ammunition, so I'll make another post on the main board.

    Cheers!
    Mike

Thank you sharps. I'm really looking forward to shooting them.
I want to practice including a photo in a post so here goes. Hopefully we'll see a picture of the 8x57JR (by C. Grundig).

        Cousin Mike,
Let me add my welcome, we are happy to have you with us. The S&B ammo is fine for the great rifle in the photo. Be sure to save your cases; handloading them would be a "fun extender", it is very satisfying to take a deer with ammo you loaded. I'm looking forward to your other posts.
        Mike

Thank you Mike. I'm hopeful about getting them both out to the woods. I have posted my ammo question to the general board.
